Early spring is the only honest window for this work By the middle of September Australian ground is warming, the grass has started moving again, and the soil still holds enough moisture from winter to be workable without being wet. That combination lasts a few weeks. A lawn aerator is used in that window because the plant can repair the disturbance quickly, and because the same job attempted in February would tear open a surface that has no capacity to close it again. Compaction is a loss of space, not a loss of soil Healthy soil is roughly half solids and half pore space, and the pores are what carry water down and air back up. Traffic, stock and machinery press those pores closed, and what remains is the same amount of soil occupying less volume. Roots do not push through solid; they grow into existing gaps. Water does not soak into a compacted layer; it sits on it and then runs off it. Both problems are the same problem, which is why a paddock that ponds after rain and a paddock with shallow roots are usually the same paddock. Spiking displaces, coring removes This is the distinction that decides whether the work helps. A solid tine or spike enters the ground by pushing soil sideways and downward, because the soil has to go somewhere and there is nowhere else for it to go. A hollow tine does something else entirely. It lifts a plug of soil out and drops it on the surface, which leaves a void behind it with nothing compressed around the walls at all. That is the whole of what a lawn core aerator is for, and it is why the job leaves a mess. Push a finger into wet clay and then pull it out; the walls of that hole are denser than the clay was. Take the same hole with an apple corer and the walls are untouched. On heavy clay a spike can therefore make the immediate hole wall tighter even while it opens the surface. Why spiking still earns its place on large areas None of that makes spiking wrong. It makes it a different tool for a different problem, and on broadacre turf and pasture that problem is usually the top few centimetres rather than a deep pan. A capped surface sheds water before it ever reaches the root zone. Puncturing that cap lets rain enter, and the fissures a drum opens do more for infiltration per hour worked than coring can, because coring is slow and produces a surface that has to be cleaned up afterwards. The practical rule is scale rather than soil type alone. Coring suits areas small enough that somebody can realistically collect or mulch the plugs afterwards; spiking suits areas measured in hectares, where nobody is picking anything up and the machine has to keep moving. Soil moisture decides whether the hole stays open There is a narrow band of soil moisture in which any of this works at all, and that band is the real reason the spring window is short. It is a physical constraint on the soil rather than a matter of scheduling preference, and no machine setting gets around it. Too dry and the spikes simply will not enter. The surface has gone hard, the drum rides over the top, and the only result is a compacted wheeling where the tractor has been. Adding ballast at that point punches through in the soft patches while still bouncing on the hard ones. Too wet is worse, because the machine works beautifully and achieves nothing. Saturated soil deforms plastically rather than fracturing, so the spike smears the hole wall on the way in and the hole closes behind it as the drum passes. The paddock looks aerated for about an hour. Grouping aerators by what happens to the displaced soil Retailers group these by working width, which tells you how quickly a paddock gets covered and nothing whatever about what is happening under the surface while it is being covered. Grouping by what becomes of the displaced soil is the comparison that decides whether the pass was worth making. Reading the list this way makes the choice obvious once the problem is named. A surface that sheds water wants spiking or slitting; a genuine plough pan wants ripping, and no lawn aerator of any kind will reach it. Penetration comes from weight, not from horsepower This is the point most often misunderstood, and it is why matching an implement to a tractor by horsepower alone goes wrong. A drum enters the ground because of the weight bearing on each spike, and a tractor that can comfortably pull the implement still cannot push it in any harder than the implement itself weighs.…
