    • The TV licence and a word on legality

For decades, watching television in the UK meant one of two things: an aerial on the roof or a dish on the wall, often paired with a monthly pay-TV contract. That world has not disappeared, but it now sits alongside two newer routes. Streaming apps bring film and series libraries over broadband, and IPTV subscriptions deliver live channels through the same connection. If you are thinking about cancelling a long-standing bundle, it helps to see all three options laid out side by side rather than judged in isolation.

This guide walks through what each route offers, how the costs are structured, what you give up, and who each one tends to suit. It deliberately avoids quoting prices for named services, because those change often; the aim is to help you compare the shape of each option so you can do your own sums.

Free-to-air television is the broadcast model most households already know. Channels are transmitted over the air from terrestrial masts or from satellites, and a tuner in your TV or set-top box picks them up. There is no monthly fee beyond the TV licence that applies to live viewing in the UK.

Streaming apps are on-demand libraries delivered over the internet. You open an app, choose a title and press play. Most are built around films and box sets rather than a live schedule, although several now include live channels or sport as part of the package.

IPTV, short for internet protocol television, delivers a schedule of live channels over broadband. Instead of a tuner picking up a broadcast signal, an app on your TV, stick or phone receives a stream from the provider’s servers. It looks and behaves much like traditional live TV, with a programme guide and channel numbers, but it arrives through your router rather than an aerial.

Free-to-air: what you get for the cost of an aerial

The appeal of free-to-air is simplicity. Once the aerial or dish is installed and the TV is tuned, there is nothing more to pay and nothing to log into. The main public service channels, their sister channels and a long tail of smaller stations are included, along with radio.

The limits are just as clear. Channel choice is fixed by what is broadcast in your area, premium sport and the latest imported dramas are largely absent, and picture quality depends on the broadcast format rather than anything you can adjust. Reception can also be patchy in some buildings and locations, and a poorly placed aerial produces breakup that no amount of fiddling with the TV will fix.

Catch-up is handled by the broadcasters’ own apps rather than by the broadcast itself, so you still need a connected TV or a stick if you want to watch something you missed.

    Streaming apps: the subscription stack

Streaming apps changed the economics of TV by letting people pay for one library at a time, with no installation and no contract longer than a month. The flexibility is real: you can pause a service when you have exhausted what interests you and come back later.

The catch is that the stack grows. One app covers films, another has the series everyone is discussing, a third has the sport, and a fourth has the children’s content. Each one is modest on its own, but together they can approach or exceed the bundle you were trying to escape. Advertising tiers, price rises and content moving between platforms all add to the admin of keeping track.

Streaming apps are also weakest at live, linear viewing. If your household likes to put a channel on in the background, flick through a guide, or watch the news as it happens, an on-demand library can feel oddly empty.

IPTV subscriptions: live TV over broadband

IPTV fills the gap that streaming apps leave. A subscription typically gives you a programme guide full of live channels, often with catch-up for recent programmes and an on-demand section alongside. Because it is app-based, the same subscription usually works on a TV, a streaming stick, a tablet and a phone, and many plans allow more than one device to watch at once.

Interest in this route has grown steadily, and many people searching for iptv uk services are former pay-TV customers who want a live schedule without a long contract or a dish. The trade-off is that everything depends on your broadband. A stable connection with sensible speed is essential, and a congested Wi-Fi network will show up as buffering in a way that an aerial never does.

Quality across the IPTV UK market varies enormously, which is why the legality and licensing checks covered later in this article matter so much. A provider that holds proper rights to the channels it carries can offer a reliable, lawful service; one that does not can vanish overnight, taking your payment with it.

    How the costs really compare

Rather than quoting figures, it is more useful to look at the shape of each cost.

    • Free-to-air: a one-off outlay for an aerial, dish or compatible TV, plus the TV licence if you watch or record live television. After that, nothing recurring.
    • Streaming apps: several small monthly fees that rise and fall as you add or drop services. No installation cost, but the total depends entirely on discipline.
    • IPTV subscriptions: usually a single monthly, quarterly or annual fee covering live channels and any included on-demand library. Annual plans tend to cost less per month but tie up money up front. Broadband is a shared cost with everything else in the house, but a very basic connection may need upgrading.

In every case, factor in the hardware. A streaming stick or a connected TV is needed for streaming apps and IPTV alike, and a second stick for another room is an easy expense to overlook.

What you gain and what you give up

    Gains

Cutting the cord almost always brings flexibility. Monthly terms replace long contracts, you can watch on the device you happen to be holding, and you stop paying for channels nobody in the house opens. Streaming apps add a depth of on-demand content that broadcast TV cannot match, while IPTV restores the live schedule that apps lack.

    Losses

You give up some reliability. Broadcast TV simply works during an internet outage; streaming and IPTV do not. You also take on more responsibility for the technology: updating apps, managing logins, keeping the router healthy and, in the case of IPTV, checking that the provider operates legitimately. Finally, premium sport and the newest releases often remain the most expensive content whichever route you choose.

    Who each option suits

Free-to-air suits households that mainly watch mainstream channels, want zero monthly admin and are happy with catch-up through broadcaster apps. It is also a sensible fallback to keep even if you add other options.

Streaming apps suit people who watch mostly films and box sets, rarely watch live, and are prepared to rotate subscriptions as their interests change.

IPTV suits viewers who still want a live guide, perhaps across several countries or languages, with the convenience of apps and multiple screens. Providers such as Maxco, which serves viewers in the UK and Spain, illustrate the model: live channels, on-demand content and apps for several device types under one subscription. As with any IPTV UK option, check how the service is licensed before you commit.

Many households end up with a blend: an aerial for the basics, one or two streaming apps for on-demand, and an IPTV subscription for live channels that broadcast TV does not carry.

The TV licence and a word on legality

Whichever route you take, the rules on the TV licence in the UK are the same. If you watch or record programmes as they are broadcast on any channel, or use the main public broadcaster’s catch-up service, you need a licence, regardless of whether the picture arrives by aerial, dish or internet. Watching purely on-demand content from other services does not, by itself, require one. The official licensing body publishes the current position and it is worth reading before you decide what to cancel.

On the IPTV side, choose providers that hold proper content licences and operate legally in your country. Be wary of offers that look too good to be true, particularly those promising every premium sports channel for a token sum, demanding payment only by untraceable methods, or offering no company details or support. Legitimate services are transparent about who they are and how to contact them, and they do not rely on you looking the other way.

Cutting the cord is less a single decision than a rearrangement. Free-to-air remains the cheapest and most dependable base, streaming apps add on-demand depth, and IPTV brings back the live schedule with modern flexibility. Work out what your household actually watches, be honest about how much admin you will tolerate, keep the TV licence rules in mind, and choose only providers that can show they operate lawfully. Done that way, the cord can be cut without losing the things you tuned in for.
