Most people only look for a tree surgeon when something has already gone wrong: a branch has come down in the wind, a tree has started leaning towards the house, or a hedge has quietly grown past the point where a step ladder and a pair of shears can cope. At that moment it is tempting to book the first person who answers the phone or the first name that turns up in a local search. That instinct is understandable, but tree work is one of the few jobs around the home where a poor choice of contractor can cost you far more than the price of the work. Chainsaws, ropes, heights and heavy timber are involved, and the consequences of a mistake can land on your roof, your neighbour’s car, or the person doing the cutting.
This guide walks through the things worth checking before you hand anyone the job. None of it requires specialist knowledge. It is mostly a matter of knowing which questions to ask, what a good answer looks like, and which warning signs should make you pause.
What a tree surgeon actually does
The terms tree surgeon and arborist are often used interchangeably in the UK. In practice, both describe someone trained to care for individual trees: pruning them, assessing their condition, removing them where necessary and dealing with what is left behind. The work covers a wide range of tasks, and a competent firm should be able to explain which one your tree needs rather than simply offering to cut it.
- Pruning: crown lifting (removing lower branches to raise the canopy), crown thinning (selectively removing branches to let light and air through), crown reduction (reducing the overall size of the canopy while keeping its shape) and deadwooding (removing dead or dying branches).
- Removal and felling: taking a tree down entirely, either in one piece where there is room or in sections where there is not.
- Hedge work: routine trimming, height reduction and, where needed, complete removal.
- Stump grinding: mechanically removing the stump and root bowl so the ground can be reused or replanted.
- Disease assessment: identifying problems such as Chalara ash dieback and advising on how to manage affected trees safely.
A firm that only ever suggests one solution, particularly if that solution is always to remove the tree or to cut the top off it, is a firm worth questioning. Good tree surgeons generally aim to keep a tree looking natural after work and to leave it healthier than they found it. Topping, which is the practice of lopping the top off a tree indiscriminately, is widely regarded as harmful because it produces weak regrowth, leaves large wounds that invite decay, and usually ends up costing more to put right later.
Qualifications: what NPTC certificates mean
In the UK, the most widely recognised qualifications for practical tree work are NPTC certificates of competence, now issued through City and Guilds. These are unit-based awards covering specific tasks: chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting, felling small and medium trees, using a chainsaw from a rope and harness, aerial rescue, using a wood chipper, stump grinding and so on. Each unit requires the candidate to demonstrate the skill under assessment rather than simply sit an exam.
This matters because tree work is not one skill but many. A person who is competent at ground-level chainsaw work is not automatically qualified to climb, and someone who can climb is not necessarily trained to carry out an aerial rescue if a colleague is injured in the canopy. When you ask a firm about qualifications, the useful question is not simply whether they are qualified but whether everyone on the team holds the certificates for the tasks they will actually be doing on your job.
A legitimate firm will not be offended by the question and should be able to show you the relevant certificates or tell you clearly which units their staff hold. If the answer is vague, or you are told that experience makes paperwork unnecessary, treat that as a warning sign. Experience is valuable, but it is not a substitute for formal training in the safe use of dangerous equipment at height.
Standards: why BS 3998 matters
BS 3998 is the British Standard covering recommendations for tree work. It sets out how pruning, felling and related operations should be carried out to protect both the tree and the people around it. It covers things like where cuts should be made, how much of a crown can reasonably be removed in one go, and how to avoid the kind of damage that leads to decay or structural weakness later on.
You do not need to read the standard yourself. What you are looking for is a contractor who works to it and can explain, in plain terms, why they intend to do the job a particular way. If you ask a firm to reduce a tree and they talk about taking it back to suitable growth points and keeping the natural shape, that is the language of someone working to the standard. If they propose to take the top off at a set height and leave stubs, they are not.
Working to a recognised standard also gives you something to fall back on if a dispute arises later. A written quotation that specifies work to BS 3998 is a clearer commitment than a verbal promise to tidy the tree up.
Insurance: what to ask to see
Insurance is the part of the checklist that people most often skip, and it is arguably the most important. Tree work carries real risk of damage to property and injury to people, and if the contractor is not properly insured, the cost of anything that goes wrong can end up with you as the homeowner.
- Public liability insurance covers damage to third-party property and injury to members of the public. For tree work, cover in the millions rather than the thousands is the norm; reputable firms commonly carry public liability cover up to five million pounds or more. Ask to see the certificate and check that it is current and that it specifically covers tree surgery rather than general gardening or landscaping, which some policies exclude.
- Employers’ liability insurance is a legal requirement for any business with employees and covers injury to the firm’s own staff. If a firm has more than one person on site, they should hold it.
- Check the dates and the named business. A certificate that has expired, or that names a different trading entity from the one quoting for your work, is not worth the paper it is printed on.
A firm that hesitates to show you its insurance documents, or says it will send them later and never does, should not be working on your property. Genuine contractors expect the question and usually have copies ready.
Written quotes and what they should include
Always get the quote in writing before any work starts, and ideally get more than one so you can compare. A verbal figure shouted from the driveway is not a quotation. A proper written quote should set out:
- Exactly which trees or hedges are included and what will be done to each one, using the correct terms (for example, crown reduce by a stated amount, or fell and remove).
- Whether the price includes removing all arisings, meaning the branches, brash and timber, or whether some will be left on site as logs or chippings.
- Whether stump grinding is included or quoted separately.
- Any access arrangements, such as needing to bring machinery through a neighbour’s land or close a footpath.
- Whether VAT is included.
- Confirmation that the work will be carried out to BS 3998 by qualified staff, and that the firm holds appropriate insurance.
Be cautious of quotes that are dramatically lower than the others. Tree work is labour-intensive, requires expensive equipment and insurance, and generates waste that costs money to dispose of properly. A price that does not seem to account for any of that is usually cutting a corner somewhere, and the corner is often insurance, waste disposal or safety.
Many established firms offer free, no-obligation quotes for both domestic and commercial work, so there is no reason to feel pressured into accepting the first figure you are given. A reputable Tree Surgeon will visit, look at the tree, listen to what you want and tell you honestly whether it is the right approach before putting anything in writing.
Legal checks before any cutting starts
Some trees are legally protected, and cutting one without permission can lead to significant penalties. A good contractor will ask about this and often check for you, but the responsibility ultimately sits with the owner of the tree, so it is worth understanding the basics.
- Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs): if a tree is covered by a TPO, you need consent from the local council before carrying out work on it. This applies to pruning as well as removal.
- Conservation areas: if your property is in a conservation area, you must give the council six weeks’ notice of proposed tree work so it has the chance to object or place a TPO on the tree.
- Nesting birds: all wild birds, their active nests and eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Tree and hedge work should avoid the main nesting season, roughly March to August, unless a proper check confirms there are no active nests.
- Protected species: larger jobs, or work on older trees with cavities, may need to consider species such as bats before any cutting begins.
If you are unsure whether any of this applies, check with your local council or its planning portal before booking work. A contractor who dismisses these questions or offers to get it done quickly before anyone notices is not someone you want to be legally associated with.
Environmental practice and waste
How a firm deals with what it cuts down tells you a good deal about how it operates. Responsible contractors chip brash on site and either leave the chippings for you to use as mulch, if you want them, or take them away for recycling. Larger timber is typically logged or processed rather than sent to landfill. Ask where the waste goes; a business that carries waste for money should be registered as a waste carrier, and fly-tipped tree waste can be traced back to the property it came from.
It is also reasonable to ask about wildlife policy. Firms that take their environmental responsibilities seriously will have a clear position on nesting birds, generally a strict rule not to disturb active nests, and will be willing to postpone or adapt work accordingly. That can occasionally mean waiting a few weeks for a job, which is a small inconvenience compared with breaking the law or destroying a nest.
Experience and local knowledge
Qualifications and insurance are the non-negotiables, but experience still counts. Trees behave differently depending on species, age, soil and exposure, and a firm that has worked in your area for a long time will have seen most of the problems your garden can produce. Long-established local businesses also have a reputation to protect, which is a strong incentive to do the job properly. - Pressure to decide on the spot, often with a discount that only applies today.
- No written quote, no business address, and payment requested in cash.
- Reluctance or inability to show qualifications or insurance documents.
- Recommending topping, or proposing to remove a healthy tree without explaining why lighter work would not do.
- No mention of TPOs, conservation areas or nesting birds when you would expect a professional to raise them.
When to call a professional rather than doing it yourself
Light pruning of small shrubs and hedges at ground level, with hand tools, is well within most people’s capability. Anything beyond that deserves a more honest assessment of the risk. Chainsaws cause serious injuries even in trained hands, and using one on a ladder or up a tree without proper training and equipment is genuinely dangerous. Falling timber is heavy and unpredictable, and a branch that looks manageable from the ground can behave very differently once it is cut.
As a rule of thumb, if the job involves a chainsaw, working above head height, a tree near a building, road or power line, or a tree that shows signs of decay or instability, it is a job for a qualified and insured professional. The cost of hiring one is almost always less than the cost of an accident.

- Be wary of doorstep callers, cash-only pricing and anyone proposing to top a tree.
Hiring a tree surgeon does not need to be complicated, but it does reward a little patience. Taking an hour to ask the right questions and compare written quotes is a small investment against the cost of getting it wrong, and it usually leads you to the firms that would have done a good job anyway.
