Microsoft’s TrueSkill, built for Xbox Live, extends the same idea to team games, where it has to guess how much each individual contributed to a win or loss.
Why placement matches exist
Your first few games in a new season are placement matches, and they move your rating aggressively. This is the confidence mechanism at work. The system doesn’t know you, so it uses early results to guess quickly, then narrows its guess as it sees more games.
This is also why your rating can feel stuck later. Once the system is confident, each match nudges the number only a little. Ten wins in a row at rank 300 out of 300 games moves you far less than ten wins in your first ten. It’s not punishing you. It’s just sure of you now.
What the matchmaker is trying to do
The matchmaker’s job is to build a match where each side has roughly a 50 percent chance of winning. That’s it. It looks for players with similar ratings, tries to balance teams, and puts them together.
But it’s juggling other constraints. Queue time is one: a perfectly balanced match that takes ten minutes to find is worse than a slightly uneven one that takes thirty seconds, so the matchmaker widens its search the longer you wait. Party size is another. If you’re a five-stack, you’ll be matched against another five-stack if possible, because coordinated teams beat random ones. Region and ping matter too. And in some games, role selection: a match needs a healer and a tank, not five damage dealers.
The result is that the matchmaker frequently compromises. The 50/50 match is the goal, not the guarantee.
The SBMM argument
Skill-based matchmaking is the practice of using your hidden rating even in casual, unranked modes. This has become one of the most argued-about design choices in gaming, particularly in shooters like Call of Duty.
The case for it: new and average players have a much better time when they aren’t put in lobbies with veterans who stomp them. Retention data shows this clearly. Games without SBMM lose new players fast.
The case against it, made mostly by experienced players: every casual match feels like a ranked one. There’s no room to relax, try a new weapon, or play with less skilled friends without dragging them into your bracket. The best players end up in perpetual sweat-fests.
Both sides are right about their own experience. The reason most games lean toward SBMM anyway is simple: there are far more average players than expert ones, and average players are the ones who quit when matches feel hopeless.
Why it feels rigged
A few things make matchmaking feel unfair even when it isn’t.
Win streaks end. If you win several in a row, your rating rises and you’re matched against tougher players. The losses that follow feel like the game “correcting” you. It’s just the system finding your level.

Your own play varies more than you think. Tired, distracted, tilted: your rating stays constant but your performance doesn’t.

Play when you’re rested. Your rating is an average, and every match you play tired drags it toward matches you’ll then struggle in.
Focus on what you did in a match rather than the result. Ranking systems reward consistency over hundreds of games, and the only thing you contribute to all of those is your own play.
And accept the 50/50. The system is designed so that, at your true level, you win half your games. If you’re winning far more, you’ll rise until you don’t. That’s not a ceiling. It’s the system working.
